Belmont Stakes Betting

Belmont Stakes betting, along with Kentucky Derby Betting and Preakness Stakes betting, is very big in the United States.  The Belmont Stakes race is the third race in the triple crown and can carry a ton of excitement, especially if the same horse has won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes races.  By the time the Belmont Stakes rolls around bettors usually have an idea of what to expect from each horse.  This means bettors have more information to work with in order to tip the odds in their favour and earn money betting on the Belmont Stakes race.

The 2010 Belmont Stakes takes place on June 5th, 2010 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.  The post time for the race is 6:30pm and the race coverage begins at approximately 5pm on ESPN.  For those of you who aren’t horse betting professional we will explain a little bit about horse betting and give you a few tips to increase your chances of success.

The most common bet at the Belmont Stakes will be picking a horse to win, place or show.  Picking a horse to win means they must win the race in order for your bet to payout.  Betting on a horse to place means they must finish either first or second and betting on a horse to show means they must finish in the top three.  I’m sure its self explanatory that picking a horse to win will have much higher odds than picking a horse to show.

The Belmont Stakes is the third race in the triple crown of horse racing, so the top contenders will have already ran two races.  This will give you a better idea of what to expect at the Belmont Stakes, but it will also give the oddsmakers more information to create more accurate odds.  Simply put the top contenders will have lower odds and payout less than the long shots.

One interesting fact that you should keep in mind is that a horse has won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes (the first two races in the triple crown) 7 times in the past 13 years.  This horse has gone on to win the Belmont Stakes none of these times.  The Belmont Stakes is a 1.5-mile race, while the Kentucky Derby is only 1.25-mile and the Preakness Stakes is only 1.1875-mile.  This extra distance changes the entire dynamic of the race and some horses who may excel at the first two races will not be able to last that extra quarter mile at the Belmont Stakes.  This is why the Belmont Stakes is often referred to as the “test of the champion”.  Therefore, my advice would be to steer clear of the favourites in this race and take a chance on some long shots who may have higher endurance and higher payouts.

Other types of horse racing bets include Quinella, Exacta, Trifect, and Superfecta bets.  These involve selecting more than one horse to finish in certian positions in the race.  A Quinella bet for example would require you to select the two horses that will finish in the top two places in the race.  In a Quinella bet which of the two horses comes first doesn’t matter.  An Exacta bet is almost the same as a Quinella bet, except you must select which horse will finish first and which will finish second.

Trifecta and Superfecta bets involve selecting the top 3 and top 4 place horses respectively.  These bets can pay out huge because the odds of getting each of the top 4 horses correct are astronomical.  No matter what method you decide to use when placing your bet just make sure you understand what it is you are placing a wager on.
